DAY 1 We head off this morning to our lovely hotel on the outskirts of Woodbridge, with stops en route for coffee and lunch, arriving with time to settle in before dinner.
DAY 2 Enjoy a guided tour of Suffolk’s pastel-coloured towns and villages, whose timber-framed houses and thatched roofs make this area so unique. Your local guide will take you on a journey to Sudbury, home to Gainsborough’s attractive townhouse which is now the birthplace museum and gallery of Thomas Gainsborough, one of Britain’s greatest painters, along with Bury St Edmunds, Stradishall, Clare, Cavendish, Long Melford and Lavenham. We include a visit to Lavenham’s historic Guildhall, one of the most spectacular timber framed buildings of medieval England, which now contains exhibitions of local history where you can learn about the people who have used the Guildhall through its almost-500 years at the heart of the community.
DAY 3 Be inspired and enjoy a slower pace of life this morning as we head to nearby Dedham, home to the Munnings Art Museum and an arts and crafts centre, and East Bergholt, picturesque villages associated with the artist John Constable. This afternoon we visit Beth Chatto’s Plants and Gardens Established in 1960 from an overgrown wasteland, it has been transformed into an informal garden harmonising with the surrounding East Anglian countryside. An extensive nursery and gift shop may tempt you with purchases, and the tearoom offers some very tempting cakes.
DAY 4 After a leisurely breakfast, we set off for Oulton Broad to enjoy a relaxing cruise along the beautiful and scenic Waveney River. This 90 minute Marshlands Cruise is a delightful cruise along the Norfolk/Suffolk border travelling through the grazing marshlands on the Angles Way and taking in the waterside village of Burgh St Peter. The open top deck offers panoramic views over the Broadland landscape and is an excellent viewing platform for wildlife. We then continue our excursion to Suffolk’s Heritage Coast and the pretty coastal town of Aldeburgh, with its unspoilt beach dotted with fishermen’s huts and charming historic high street, before heading back for our final evening at the hotel.
DAY 5 We depart after breakfast for our homeward journey, stopping on the way for coffee and lunch before reaching home in the early evening.
