DAY 1 We make our way to Wales today, stopping in the village of Tintern in the Wye Valley for lunch en route.
DAY 2 Our first stop this morning is Caerphilly, for a visit to the largest castle in Wales. Get to know how one of the truly great fortresses of medieval Europe actually worked, and explore this 13th century sleeping giant and its famous Leaning Tower – even wonkier than that of Pisa – before time at leisure in the town, famous for its cheese. We then proceed to St Fagans National Museum of History, which stands in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle. Here you will see how people in Wales have lived, worked and spent their leisure time. The re-erected buildings include farmhouses, a row of ironworkers’ cottages, a medieval church and a Victorian school, and there are gardens to explore and workshops where traditional skills are demonstrated.
DAY 3 Today begins with admission to the Royal Mint Visitor Centre, for an escorted tour of the production process. During your visit, you will learn all about where UK coins are made and gain a fascinating insight into the history of The Royal Mint. From here, enjoy an engaging, self-guided tour of static and interactive exhibits, bringing to life the Mint’s heritage. There is a café on site, and you can purchase mementos from the gift shop as a reminder of your visit. This afternoon, we enjoy an introductory tour in the attractive city centre of Cardiff, the bustling Welsh capital, as well as the modernised Cardiff Bay with its fascinating public buildings, including the Welsh Assembly.
DAY 4 We set out after breakfast this morning on an excursion to the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park and a morning visit to Big Pit Mining Museum to learn about the region’s heritage. As well as an underground tour of the mine, there is a virtual tour above ground, providing a moving and entertaining illustration of the lives of miners at work and home. This afternoon we visit Penderyn Visitor Centre for an hour-long Distillery Tour to learn about the founding of Penderyn, how the award-winning whisky is made and what makes it so unique. See the exhibition area, mill, mash tun, innovative single copper pot stills, and a pair of pot stills. Plus enjoy a couple of tasters in the Tasting Bar afterwards.
DAY 5 We head for home today, with stops en route.
