DAY 1 We head to Dover this morning to catch the ferry over to France, completing our journey in time for dinner at our comfortable hotel in Honfleur.
DAY 2 After breakfast this morning, we set out for a morning visit to Rouen, situated on the banks of the River Seine, Normandy’s vibrant, historic and cultural capital. Monet’s famous depictions of Rouen Cathedral have made this vast edifice many visitors’ favourite building in the city, but there are also many fine museums to explore, not to mention the Gros Horloge clock tower, France’s oldest inn La Couronne and the beautiful modern church dedicated to Joan of Arc. This afternoon, we head back to Honfleur where you will have free time to explore this pretty town with its colourful half-timbered houses which jostle for position on the quays, along with art galleries and restaurants, or maybe walk over the Pont de Normandie bridge, which affords phenomenal panoramic views of the estuary from above.
DAY 3 This morning we head to Bayeux, which boasts a stunning historic centre as well as its world-famous, UNESCO-listed tapestry depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Immerse yourself in the embroidered story of the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, with a visit to the museum which allows you to discover the Bayeux Tapestry in its entirety and to understand its history and its creation thanks to an audio-guided commentary. We then meet our expert guide for a guided tour, visiting the British Cemetery at Bayeux before heading to the D-Day Landing Beaches for the British in Arromanches, Asnelles and Ouistreham. Pegasus Bridge is just behind Sword Beach and there we will stop at the Café Gondré (the first liberated house in France) before going to The Ranville Cemetery which is mainly dedicated to the 6th Airborne division.
DAY 4 Today we travel to Caen, the lively and dynamic city of William the Conqueror for free time to perhaps visit the two Abbeys and Castle, or spend time at leisure in the historical city centre. On our return journey to Honfleur this afternoon, we make a stop at glamorous Deauville, home to the prestigious annual Deauville American Film Festival, famous boardwalk and magnificent beach.
DAY 5 We head homeward today, crossing the Channel by ferry before arriving home in the early evening.
