DAY 1 This morning we set off towards Peterborough, with stops en route, arriving at our hotel in the leafy suburbs of the city with time to settle in before dinner.
DAY 2 After a leisurely breakfast this morning, we head out to Barnsdale Gardens, the UK’s largest collection of individually designed gardens, which was created by the much-loved late BBC Gardeners’ World presenter, Geoff Hamilton. It has been dubbed ‘a theme park for gardeners’ because of its uniquely designed collection of 38 individual, yet realistic, small gardens that guide you around this eight acre site. There’s also the fabulous Chelsea Flower Show, Gold Medal-winning plant nursery to tempt you, while the Tea Room, serving locally sourced and freshly prepared food, is there to feed and revitalise you. This afternoon we enjoy a relaxing afternoon cruise on Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. Visitors can enjoy the scenery from the water, amidst the sailors, anglers and waterbirds, whilst listening to commentary highlighting points of interest.
DAY 3 “The finest scene between London and Edinburgh” is how Sir Walter Scott described Stamford, a Georgian town of immense charm with over 600 listed buildings, which has been used many times as a filming location. We head there this morning with time for you to explore this bustling market town before making our way to Burghley House, a magical estate and one of the largest and grandest houses of the Elizabethan age. It is home to extensive collections, eighteen magnificent State Rooms, awe-inspiring works of art, priceless treasures, the garden of surprises and landscaped parkland.
DAY 4 Today we visit the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, Belvoir Castle. This extraordinary 11th-century stately home is adorned with priceless artwork and opulent decor, and home to some of the county’s most magnificent views – from the battlements you can see for miles over the counties of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. Belvoir is home to a range of wildlife which you may spot as you explore the formal gardens and parkland surrounding the Castle, and there are plenty of eateries on site when you fancy some refreshment.
DAY 5 We head for home today, with stops en route, arriving back in the early evening.
