DAY 1 We set off this morning and head towards the West Country. En route, we make a stop at Jamaica Inn, which became internationally famous after the publication of Daphne du Maurier’s best-selling novel set around this smuggling hostelry. We then continue on to our hotel in Fistral Beach, arriving with time to settle in before dinner.
DAY 2 After breakfast we head out for a tour along the North Atlantic Coast via the bustling village of Perranporth, picturesque St Agnes with its mining history, the rich heritage of Portreath, dramatic coastline at Hell’s Mouth and natural harbour at the Hayle Estuary before arriving in the delightful town of St Ives. Nestled in St Ives Bay, the lovely fishing harbour is a beautiful place to stroll and browse, or maybe visit the Tate St Ives gallery.
DAY 3 Today we head to Falmouth, home of the third deepest natural harbour in the world. Falmouth rests at the point where seven rivers flow into a long stretch of water and boasts a beautiful sheltered harbour. With time to explore after arrival, you can admire views of Pendennis Castle (built by Henry VIII) or perhaps visit the National Maritime Museum; lovely town shops and coastal walks abound. We then board our boat for a cruise along the picturesque River Fal, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Special Area of Conservation. Your cruise will sail through deep-sided wooded valleys passing riverside gardens, historic houses, large ships, the Tudor castles of St Mawes and Pendennis, and Falmouth Harbour. A unique commentary provides information throughout the cruise, and you may even encounter some of the native wildlife.
DAY 4 This morning, we head out via the china clay area of St Austel to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, home to Europe’s largest garden restoration and National Collection of camellias and rhododendrons set within the 200 acre site. Lost to the brambles after World War I, the garden was reawakened in 1990. From productive gardens to pleasure grounds, outdoor jungle and woodland trails, there is so much to see and explore. We then head back towards our hotel where you can either enjoy an afternoon in Newquay or spend time at leisure in the hotel and maybe explore the dramatic headlands of Fistral Beach.
DAY 5 We head homeward today, stopping on the way at the glorious destination of Buckfast Abbey on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, before arriving home late afternoon.
