DAY 1 We head off this morning to Northampton for our four night stay, with comfort stops en route before arriving with time to settle in before our evening meal.
DAY 2 We depart the hotel this morning for Waddesdon Manor. This stunning house was once home to the Rothschild family. Built in the style of a French Château, this opulent house is an overload on all the senses. The extravagant interiors include exquisite furniture, porcelain, paintings and carpets. The gardens are extensive, ranging from woodland walks to formally laid beds. They remain in keeping with those originally set out by the Rothschild family, whom many considered at the time to be at the forefront of Victorian gardening.
DAY 3 We set off to the wonderful and busy canal centre of Stoke Bruerne this morning for a short canal boat trip along the Grand Union Canal. Afterwards, if time allows, enjoy a walk along the canal side or maybe visit the Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum (additional admission charges apply). This afternoon we head to Castle Ashby Gardens. With parkland designed by Capability Brown, you can enjoy a number of wonderful gardens including formal Italian gardens, an Arboretum, and a small Animal Menagerie. There is also the lovely walled garden tea shop which is well worth a visit.
DAY 4 After a leisurely start this morning we head off for a visit to the remarkable Rockingham Castle. Built on the instruction of William the Conqueror and frequented by Charles Dickens, the castle has been in the current owner’s family for 450 years. Visitors usually start their self-guided tour ‘below stairs’ and work their way through the Panel Room, Long Gallery and the Great Hall. You may also wish to take a stroll through the tranquil formal gardens. This afternoon you can explore the lovely market town of Market Harborough, where you have time at leisure to visit the local shops, or maybe visit the beautiful St Dionysius Church with its famous stained glass windows.
DAY 5 We head homeward today, visiting the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Blenheim Palace on the way. This stunning property, home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture which boasts over 300 years of history to discover, set within more than 2000 acres of parkland landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown.
