DAY 1 After an early start this morning, we take the afternoon ferry from Holyhead to Dublin, and make the short journey to Talbot Hotel Stillorgan on the outskirts of Dublin.
DAY 2 After breakfast, we head to Athlone, with its Norman fortress strategically sited on the banks of the River Shannon, before continuing over to the west coast to our hotel in the charming town of Westport.
DAY 3 Why not begin your free day in Westport by taking full advantage of the hotel’s extensive leisure facilities or enjoy a relaxing read in the conservatory. Westport itself has been a regular winner of Ireland’s Tidiest Town Award, with its flower baskets and graceful tree-lined streets overlooking the Carrowbeg River. Westport House is within easy reach, an attractive 18th Century Mansion and pleasure grounds situated on the edge of Clew Bay.
DAY 4 Today we follow the shoreline via Louisburgh for a scenic drive, taking in the breathtaking views of the islands and Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s Holy Mountain. We continue through the haunting beauty of the Doo Lough Valley, a long lake set against the Sheefy Hills and the slopes of the Mwelerea Mountains, and follow the coast road to the picturesque village of Leenane. We then visit Kylemore Abbey, a neo-gothic castle mirrored in its own lake, which is now run by Benedictine nuns; its walled Victorian Gardens are charming.
DAY 5 Enjoy a full day excursion around Magical Mayo today. Make your way to Achill, Ireland’s largest island. This is a rugged, unspoilt and spectacular region dominated by Slievemore Mountain that rises dramatically to the north before continuing to Achill Sound where you join the famous circular ‘Atlantic Drive’. Pass the ancient Church of Kildavnet, founded by Dympna who fled to the island to escape her father’s incestuous demands, and Granuaile’s Castle, the watchtower for the 16th century pirate queen.
DAY 6 We say farewell to Westport today after breakfast and travel south via Kilkenny, a medieval time capsule built around its magnificent castle. Explore the narrow streets around the abbey and cathedral before we continue on to Waterford and our last overnight hotel.
DAY 7 We catch the early morning ferry with breakfast on board before returning home.
